Chapter Twenty-One

Belle and Anna sat in Anna’s bedroom. They listened to the cassette tape they had recorded a few nights ago and danced along to their favourite songs.

‘So, did you get it?’ Anna asked.

Belle smiled at her friend and grabbed her handbag from Anna’s bedside table. She reached into the small, sequined bag and pulled out her purse. Opening it up and flicking through her cards, she pulled out a driver’s licence and handed it over to Anna.

Anna held up the fake ID, which was a NSW driver’s licence, with Belle’s photo expertly printed on it. The name on it read, ‘Britney Rearden.’ Her address was listed as 77 Oaks Court, Darfield.

‘Britney Rearden?’

‘Yeah, well Britney’s all the rage now, isn’t she? And Rearden, I just made up.’

‘You think it’ll work?’

‘Yeah, as long as we don’t see Maz Rogers in there, or any of Mum or Dad’s friends. He said yours will be ready next week.’

The girls had been told for the entirety of last year about one of the boys in their classes cousin who had a contact at the motor registry. This contact could expertly print out ‘replacement’ driver’s licences at $100 each. All the buyer had to do was supply a licence photo and give them whatever information they required. The girls didn’t believe them at the start, but when the boys started flashing the replica licences, they were intrigued. There was nothing to do in Darfield, and a chance to drink at the only pub legally in town a year early was too good to miss.

‘Cool,’ Anna said. She was secretly a bit worried about the whole endeavour, and although Belle looked grown up, she still felt like she looked fourteen. She imagined walking into the pub and being walked straight out the door again, humiliated in front of Belle and all her friends.

‘Yeah, I can't wait.’

Anna’s Mum popped her head into the door, and Belle scrambled quickly, throwing the replica licence under Anna’s pillow.

‘You girls need anything before bed?’ she asked.

‘No Mum, we’re fine. We’re just putting on a movie.’

‘Okay, goodnight.’

The girls sat quietly and watched the scary movie on Anna’s small tv on her dresser. They sat close together, and Belle could feel Anna jump at some of the scarier scenes. As they began to get towards the end, she thought she saw the flash of a light coming from Anna’s window, and got up to investigate. ‘What was that?’ she asked Anna.

‘What?’

‘I swear I saw a light out there?’

‘I didn’t see anything? You know that back lane. It’s a dead end. No one ever comes down here.’

The girls sat back down and turned the movie on. Minutes later, they heard a bang and a clatter right underneath the window. Anna screamed, and it woke up the house, with her father running in and opening the door wide. ‘You girls all good in here?’

‘Someone’s at the window, Dad!’

Anna’s Dad ran back down the hallway. Belle looked at Anna and the girls took off, following. Getting
